Biography

Mariya Gabriel is the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.
Under her leadership, the new Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, and the cultural strand of Creative Europe programmes (2021-2027) will be implemented.

Between 2017 and 2019, Mariya Gabriel was European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society. She is First Vice-President of the European People's Party (EPP), and, since 2012, Vice-President of EPP Women. Commissioner Gabriel is a board member of the United Nations youth programme Generation Unlimited. She is ranked among the 50 most influential women in Europe in the field of cybersecurity by the leading European cybersecurity magazine SC Media UK (2019).

Mariya Gabriel is also known for her involvement in the fight for gender equality. Among others, she received the prestigious Italian prize “Golden Apple”. In November 2020, Commissioner Gabriel received the Annual Award of the Vienna Economic Forum "Partner of the Year 2020".

Biography

Themis Christophidou is the Director-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture of the European Commission, since March 2018.
She is a civil engineer with 35 years of experience in private and public sector management. After having worked in the private sector for 15 years, she joined the European Commission in 2001.

During the last 20 years she has held various positions, including in the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy, as Head of Cabinet of the Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and as Head of Cabinet of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management. Themis Christophidou is an alumna of the civil engineering faculty of the Metsovio Polytechnic University of Athens. Born in Famagusta, Cyprus, she is trilingual, fluent in Greek, French, English.

Biography

Angela is a social scientist working for transdisciplinary sustainability projects since 2013.
She holds a PhD in Rural Sociology from Wageningen University. She currently researches transformative social innovation & rural development issues at the Dept. of Land, Environment, Agriculture & Forestry of the University of Padova, preparing the field for her Marie Curie Individual Fellowship project 'VERVE'.

Angela is passionate about participatory action-oriented methods and care-full processes of learning and co-creation. She is co-founder of Re.imaginary, an online database of creative methods and co-author of 'Once Upon the Future: Everyday Adventures that Change the World'.

Anguel Beremliysky

Anguel Beremliysky has been a member at the Common Secretariat of the Conference on the Future of Europe for the past seven months. Previously he has been working for DG REGIO, dealing with citizens’ engagement, administrative capacity and cohesion policy in Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia. Diane Purcell-Meyerink

Biography :

Diane Purcell-Meyerink has 20 years of experience in Science research, covering both fundamental questions and applied research. Specialisations include Microbial Ecology, Phycology, Water Science, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics Taxonomy, Astrobiology and Biogeochemistry.
Diane’s background is built on interesting projects worldwide, from the SETI Institute at NASA, to Imperial College, to Hong Kong University, and even field work in Tibet, which are all connected through Phycology or algal research. She has recently received a Marie Curie Fellowship for Research Leaders in collaboration with the Irish government through Teagasc, working on native brown seaweed species from Ireland and New Zealand.
The first half of this fellowship is based at the Cawthron Institute in New Zealand, where optimisation of seaweed cultivation for bioproducts is being investigated. The second half will be based in Ireland and will concentrate on the extraction procedures need to release the bioproducts of interest.

Elena Atrián Blasco

Biography

Elena Atrián-Blasco is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow at the Instituto de Nanociencia y Materiales de Aragón (INMA-CSIC/Unizar), Spain.

She obtained her PhD (2015) at the ISQCH (Univ. Zaragoza – CSIC), under the supervision of Mariano Laguna and Elena Cerrada, working on the study of gold complexes. After two predoctoral internships at the LCC, Toulouse, with Peter Faller and Christelle Hureau, she joined the Alzoid team in 2016 for a 3-year postdoc working on Dr. Hureau’s ERC StG aLzINK project. Her work was then focused on the role of metal ions in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Her current MSCA project, PePiPOM, aims at developing new antimicrobial hybrid materials, composed of polyoxometalates and peptides mainly, with a combination of mechanisms of action for improved activity. Dr. Atrián-Blasco has enjoyed participating in outreach activities since the beginning of her research career, and recently co-created Bacterfield, a strategy board game based on bacteria’s real actions.

Biography :

Dr Fabrice Serodes (PhD) graduated from the Ecole Normale Superieure (Paris) in History and holds a joint PhD degree in History from the universities of Salford and Tours. He has held several academic positions at French universities and institutes (IEP Sciences Po) and written several books on Anglo-French relations, the EU institutions and cultural diplomacy. He works currently as Horizon Europe MSCA expert. He also teaches history, geography and geopolitics in European classes at Brussels French High-school Jean Monnet (AEFE), where he has participated in the pioneer REACT project by welcoming young MSCA researchers at the school since 2017 and moderated a panel on Youth and Climate with his students at the 2019 European R&I Days.

Kairis Ulp

Biography :

Kairis Ulp joined the European Commission in 2020, having previously served as the Head of the Estonian Sports Register, the Estonia’s state information system for sport. During the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2017, she was the Chair of the Working Party on Sport and in 2018-2020 member of the European Commission’s Expert Group “Skills and Human Resources Development in Sport”.
In addition, Kairis has extensive experience in international student sport, as she was the member of the FISU Executive Committee in 1999-2019, where in 2008-2014 she chaired the Winter Universiade Supervision Committee.
